Dear Professor Pfister,
Argus, Sept. 12 (“University reflects on anniversary of 9/11”): “Professor of English and American Studies Joel Pfister posited that the entertainment industry’s response to 9/11 was the result of a culture rooted in a voyeuristic and consumptive habit that is uniquely American. When former Mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani and President Bush assuaged the national psyche in the weeks following the attacks, Professor Pfister reminded the audience that Americans were urged to remain staunch in the face of terrorism in part by going out and going shopping. Now, Pfister, claims, Americans have effectively turned 9/11 into a kind of commodity.”
And President Clinton, never one to table his priapic appetite’s importunings, effectively turned every woman into a kind of commodity. Professor Pfister, give credit where credit is due: no man has done more to implant in the national psyche “a voyeuristic and consumptive habit that is uniquely American” than serial consumer Clinton.
The rock-and-roll president, he was called. And while he rocked, al Qaeda rolled.
