The Wesleyan women’s tennis team advanced to a 3-0 record this past Wednesday, as they ventured up to Dudley, Mass. to face off against the Nichols College Bison. The Cardinals came away with four big conquests in the singles rounds and another two wins in doubles play, marking it a 6-3 victory.
In the singles rounds, the number one seed, Genevieve Aniello ’13 played a competitive match, but was unable to come out on top and took down a 4-6, 3-6 loss. Playing at the number two spot, Grace Smith ’14 had an impressive match, dominating in both sets to finish with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Captain Linda McDougal ’10 played a well-fought match at the number three spot as she lost the first set 2-6, came back and won the second, 6-2, and triumphed again in the third set 6-0. The number four player, Nicki Softness ’14 truly stepped up her level of play this weekend, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-0. Liza Fletcher ’14 had her first showing this weekend in the number five spot, but was unfortunately defeated 1-6, 0-6. Kaitlyn Clark ’14 closed out the singles rounds for the Cards with an extensive match in which she ultimately came away with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Maintaining momentum of the singles rounds, the Cards moved on to the doubles rounds with intensity and energy. The number one pair, Aniello and Softness kicked into gear with an initial 8-3 conquest. McDougal and Smith followed with a similar feat as they defeated their opponents 8-6. The freshman duo, Fletcher and Clark, held down the number three spot, but they were unable to come away with the win and took home a final 2-8 loss for the Cards.
With only two matches left in the regular season, the Cardinals look to keep their winning streak rolling as they compete against Roger Williams this Saturday, the 26th at home on the Vine Street Courts.
