Spring 2008 season: Cardinal key returnees: Rachel Stemerman ’09, Lacrosse, goalie

Finishing up last year with an overall 8-6 record and 5-4 in the NESCAC, the women’s lacrosse team looks to start the 2008 season strong with nine returning players, including goalie Rachel Stemerman ’09, who largely contributed to the success in 2007.

Stemerman joined the team last year after two seasons of playing goalie for women’s ice hockey and had an impressive season on the turf. Starting 13 out of 14 games last season, Stemerman had a .540 save percentage and 8.72 goals against average. As the number-one goalie for the team, she is ready to hold up the defensive line.

“I’m working on being a solid and consistent goal tender this season,” Stemerman said. “Instead of the traditional stand and freeze, I will be working on mobility and aggressiveness. That will be our defense’s philosophy for 2008.”

Wesleyan finished last season with one of the lowest goals-per-game average in the NESCAC, and defense certainly has high expectations to live up to. Co-captain Beck Dorey-Stein ’08 is another key player returning for the Cardinals. Dorey-Stein was third on the team in groundballs in 2007 with 35. Communication between Dorey-Stein, Stemerman and the defensive squad will be critical for the success of the team.

“Defense looks really good,” Stemerman said. “We’ve got some great returnees and are definitely ready for games to begin.”
