The Cardinals lost to Smith College in overtime on Wednesday, 2-1, the third one-goal loss this season. The loss brings their record to 1-3-0. Wesleyan got on the board first in the 28th minute, jumping out early in a way they hadn’t been able to do against Williams or Trinity. Following a free kick, Dasha Battelle ’11 put the rebound away for her first goal of the season.
Entering halftime with a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard and leading Smith in corner kicks 6-1, the Cardinals were controlling the pace of the game by pressuring the Smith defense.
Despite Wesleyan’s momentum, Smith came out swinging in the second half, scoring on a free kick, tying the game at one goal apiece.
As they entered overtime, both teams looked eager to find the game winner. It came for Smith as the final shot slid past Andrea Giuliano ’09.?Giuliano and Gavi Elkind ’09 shared the net, as they have every game this season. Elkind started the game and played a clean first half with 4 saves. Giuliano came in at the start of the second half and made 3 saves, but allowed Smith’s only two goals. Elkind has the better save percentage on the season with .900, but Giuliano has faced more shots.?
Wesleyan will look to bounce back from the losses at Trinity and Smith against Middlebury at home this Saturday.
