Cardinal Athletes of the Weekend: Owen Kiely ’06

No one has been having a better season for the indoor track team than grad student Owen Kiely ’06. An All-American in cross-country, Kiely came close to breaking two Wesleyan records at Boston University Valentine’s Invitational on Friday. With a time of 8.22.14 in the 3k, Kiely came within .05 seconds of the school record held by Jeff Messer. Nonetheless, the Athol, MA native placed 12th out of 165 participants, no small feat. Later in the day, Kiely came close to another Cardinal record, this time in the mile. Finishing with a time of 4.17.76, Kiely came within 2.76 seconds of the school record. Two weeks ago, Kiely shattered the school record in the 5k, previously held by his good friend Wes Fuhrman ’05, by over 16 seconds, finishing with a time of 14:26.75. His second place finish in the event out of 43 runners automatically qualified him for the NCAA Division III Championships. Kiely and the track team head to Bates over the weekend to take part in the New England Division III Championships.
