We’d like to thank all of you who participated in the demonstration on Friday outside Rep. DeLauro’s New Haven office. You made it a success. We were loud, enthusiastic, and passionate; our presence was impossible to ignore. Thanks especially to The Hill People, whose music kept us entertained and invigorated. The demonstration was covered in the two major New Haven newspapers, the Register (see the article at http://www.nhregister.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17453304&BRD=1281&PAG=461&dept_id=7576&rfi=6) and Advocate. This coverage will guarantee us a strong position in our meeting with Rep. DeLauro.
In light of the elections on Tuesday, protests like this are especially important. The Democrats were elected on the anti-war vote, and it is crucial that we make the war more than a mere campaign issue. The American people must actively demand an expedient end to the war.
This protest is not the end of our DeLauro campaign. We must keep up the pressure to ensure that she takes serious action to end the war. Furthermore, our efforts as an organization are not limited to pressuring politicians. Working within the legislative system is important, but no one single approach will bring an end to the war. Students for Ending the War in Iraq (SEWI) works on counter recruitment and solidarity efforts with Iraqi organizations, and continues to bring speakers and films to campus. The anti-war movement needs a range of approaches, many dedicated activists, and a lot of perseverance to succeed.
Thanks again to all those who made it out to the protest. We hope that even more of you will be able to make it next time. You’re cool. Together we can end this war!
SEWI meets every Saturday at 5:00 PM in Outhouse (132 High St). Let’s take action now!
