Two tough losses hit field hockey

After starting the season running with a 2-1 record, the field hockey team has endured two tough losses, each by one goal.

Last Saturday the Cardinals met the ninth-ranked Middlebury College on Middlebury’s home turf in a hotly contested game. Middlebury capitalized on a penalty corner play in the waning minutes of the first half to put it up 1-0. Goalie Breen McDonald ’10 helped give Wesleyan a chance to get back by amassing 15 saves on the day, but Middlebury’s solid defense didn’t allow a score.

On Wednesday the Cardinals met the Lyons of Wheaton in an exciting battle. The Lady Cards jumped out to a 1-0 lead just before half time on a goal by Courtney Tetrault ’07. Following the half, Wesleyan was aggressive in its quest for insurance, as it out-shot Wheaton 15-5 in the second frame. However, Wheaton scored a tying goal on a fast break shortly after the intermission, and the game-winning goal with only 1:08 left in regulation.

The Cardinals will have a chance to rebound this Saturday at 11 a.m. against Connecticut College at home in a conference match-up.
