Lady Cards compete in ITA tournament

Entering the ITA Regional Tournament with a dual-match record of 1-1, the women’s tennis team’s heartfelt effort this weekend produced mixed results. The two skilled players representing the Cards in the singles bracket produced a combined record of 2-3, while the doubles team went 0-2 for the weekend in their respective brackets.

The ITA Tournament, which took place in Cambridge, Massachusetts, included players from a field of nineteen teams in Division III.

In the singles bracket, Ania Preneta ’09 defeated Babson’s Kali Hogan in the first round by a 6-1, 6-1 score, but fell to the tournament’s #1 seed, Connecticut College’s Beret Remak, 1-6, 1-6. Preneta credits Remak for being a “crafty player” and although she said it was “tough to play” the tournament’s top seed, Preneta enjoyed the overall experience of the tournament.

“Being there made me want to play more even after I lost,” said Preneta, the team’s number one player.

Also in the single’s bracket, Madalina Ursu ’09 lost to Brandeis’ Ana Katz by a 1-6, 3-6 margin in her singles bracket. In the consolation round, Ursu defeated her second round opponent 6-0, 6-0, but went on to suffer a 4-6, 1-6 loss to Middlebury’s Emily Holick.

The Cardinals had also earned a doubles slot in the tournament. Meredith Holmes ’10 and Rachael Ghorbani ’09 played hard in the face of difficult competition but eventually fell 4-8 to the Wellesley duo of Jenna Mezin and Hali Walther and later lost to Connecticut College’s Jessica Bender and Beret Remak 5-8 in the consolation round.

Next up for the Cardinals is a Wednesday date at Wellesley, followed by a date at Bates College on the first Saturday of October before returning home to face Connecticut College on October 10th.
