Sports Short: Women’s tennis defeats Skidmore in opener

The women’s tennis team defeated the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in convincing fashion in Sunday’s season opener, winning 6-3.

The top three women in the singles order added key victories, as Ania Preneta ’09, Mada Ursu ’09 and Rachael Ghorbani ’09 won in straight sets. Preneta and Ghorbani were both tested in the first sets before crushing their opponents with Preneta’s first set going into a tiebreaker where she proved victorious, while Ghorbani came back to win her first set 6-4 after falling behind 1-4 in the opening games.

Also victorious in the singles lineup without losing more than one game was senior captain Tori Santuro ’07, who played her first match since last fall, as she went abroad during the spring semester.

At the fourth and fifth singles positions, Anika Fisher ’10 and Meredith Holmes ’10 were both defeated in the first singles matches of their careers. Fisher and Holmes were competitive in their first sets, but the freshmen were only able to win one game combined.

In doubles, Holmes and Casey Simchek ’10 won their first varsity matches as Holmes teamed with Ghorbani for an 8-6 victory at second doubles, while Simchek teamed with Alex Sirois ’09 for an 8-4 win at third doubles.

The women’s tennis team will face Vassar at home in its second match of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m.
