WesCeleb: Justin Costa ’06

Justin has been bugging me for weeks to WesCeleb, and I kept resisting because he’s my housemate, he keeps using all the coffee beans, etc. Then I realized, oh yeah, this kid actually does stuff. President of the Wesleyan Democrats and a leader of Campus Progress—oh wait, you don’t know what that is? Only one way to find out.

KR: So tell me just what Campus Progress is?

JC: Campus Progress is this awesome student group that exists to counteract conservative institutions and give lots of money to liberal students across the country. They’re generally interested in political causes, but that extends to things like the environment. They give a lot of money to publications of various sorts.

KR: Would they give money to the Argus?

JC: Probably not. I mean, you’re not liberal enough. You’re supposed to be reporting the news! Ain’t you fair and balanced?

KR: I’m not going to answer that one. So has Campus Progress funded anything at Wesleyan?

JC: They fund us all the time. We did one event last semester with the Supreme Court nomination and they helped us fund that. Then we had the things with David Halperin a few weeks ago and they funded all of that. They’re funding a lot of events that the Democrats and Campus Progress have put on.

KR: Is there a difference between Democrats and Campus Progress?

JC: Yeah, they’re really different. The overlap is because two of the national representatives for Campus Progress are members of Wesdems. There are three of us at Wesleyan out of 60 in the whole country.
