Cardinal Character: Susannah Ragab ’06

This week, I sat down with the captain of the women’s tennis team, Suz Ragab ’06. This spring, Ragab has been the main anchor of the tennis team as the only senior on the squad. Ragab has posted a perfect 10-0 record in doubles and singles matches since the spring season began. We’re fortunate that “the Suz” found spare time to divulge her secrets to success with the Argus.

VC: How’d you guys do today against Smith?

SR: We just won 8-1.

VC: So what’s the secret to your success this spring? Been eating your Wheaties?

SR: Actually we just stopped at this really good burrito place on the way home from the match. Have we been eating our Wheaties? I’m all about the low carb diet.

VC: How has your team matured from the fall to the spring?

SR: First of all, everyone is in much better shape this spring. In the fall, no one would run for a half mile without dying. Everyone’s more mentally tough now. I think that’s especially true for the freshmen. They were used to crushing everyone in juniors, but it’s been a wake up call to play Middlebury and Amherst. Everyone now has more tools to use in their repertoire.

VC: If you could relive your Wesleyan experience as one of the freshmen on the team, who would it be and why?

SR: I don’t know, maybe a little bit of each of ’em. I think that I would probably pick Mada so I could use her suave accent to woo every man in sight

VC: Which of the five freshmen are the craziest, on or off the court. Word is on the street that the tennis team goes big or goes home.

SR: I think the craziest one is probably Alex. She is so passionate she makes like the weirdest noises if she makes a mistake, and she does summersaults when she misses a volley. She does backwards summersaults. She does that weird thing they teach you in volleyball. She like drops to the ground and does a backwards roll then pops up again. She is acrobatic and dynamic. I might go with myself off the court as the craziest. I think a lot of people agree with that. It’s gotta be Alex or I, or maybe Mada.

VC: If you could go out on a date with anyone on the guy’s team, who would it be?

SR: Maybe Quinn [Olbrich ’09]. Actually, I don’t know Quinn that well. Probably I gotta say I might go with the Matt [O’Connell ’09] and Jafaar [Rizvi ’09] duo. I love those kids, and they always come over my house and party. It actually might be Max Kates ’06. We’ve had a lot of good times together.

VC: Ready to take that to next step with Max?

SR: Is this a commitment thing? Maybe I’ll re-answer that after the last question.

VC: What one sentence describes the tennis team?

SR: We are a sure fire ace with the advantage.
