The women’s lacrosse team may be lacking in size this year, but its depth and strength undoubtedly exceeds anything expected from a small team. Coming back from a respectable 2005 season, the team is looking forward to a strong season this spring.
Having practiced diligently six days a week for some time, the team is prepared to start its regular season. The Cardinals concluded the 2005 season with an overall record of 7-7 and a NESCAC record of 3-6. At the close of the regular season, they were ranked 15th in the IWLCA National Division III poll.
“We have a very young team but we have been training hard so we have the ability to have a strong season,” said Schuyler Swenson ’09. “The seniors have set a very good tone for the rest of the underclassmen.”
With the help of assistant coaches Minta Sayres and Eva Bergsten-Meredith, head coach Holly Wheeler will be returning for her seventh year coaching the women’s lacrosse team.
Returning varsity members include Captain Laura Siegle ’06, Becky Meredith ’06, Kate Jones ’06, Amanda Belichick ’07, Jen Bianculli ’07, Sophia Kim ’08, and Fiona Lundy ’08. Meredith was the leading scorer, accumulating 35 goals and 13 assists while the returning goaltender Jones claimed a .484 save percentage last year.
Nine of the 16 members are freshman, confirming the youth of the team. Participating in intense workouts and 7 a.m. practices demonstrates nothing short of deep passion for the sport among team members.
“The team looks great,” said Beck Dorey-Stein ’08. “The returning players are solid and have set a very good example for the freshmen who are demonstrating great potential. Coach started out by getting everyone on the same page in regards to proper defense. Now we are beginning to focus on offense.”
The opener is away, this Saturday, Mar. 11. The opposing team, Steven’s Institute of Technology, finished last season with an overall record of 15-3.
