Looking to improve on its 11-18 record from a year ago, the softball team returns All-NESCAC sluggers Molly Gaebe ’07 and Becca Feiden ’08. As a pitcher, Gaebe went 5-8 last year while hitting .341, and Feiden led the team with a .366 batting average as the starting center fielder.
The team returns an experienced core of ballplayers including Marcia Whitehead ’08, Karla Hargrave ’08, and senior tri-captains Lynn Leber, Beth Benstein, and Sarah Gillooly. The Cardinals also boast seven new freshmen, led by shortstop Molly O’Connell, in a constantly developing program.
“We’ve got a lot of newcomers and we’re returning most of our top batters from last year,” Feiden said. “We are hoping to get off to a good start in California and give Williams and Middlebury a run for their money.”
Over spring break in California the Cardinals are slated to compete in 14 games, including the Sun West Tournament, where NESCAC rival Tufts will also compete. After returning from the break the team will begin a busy April, playing 11 games before the NESCAC Tournament in the beginning of May.
“This team has made huge strides in the last four years.” said tri-captain Beth Bernstein ’06. “Our deep pitching staff and solid bats make me extremely confident that a NESCAC title is on the horizon.”
The first home game for the Cards is Saturday, Apr. 1 at 12 p.m. on the softball field north of the Freeman Athletic Center.
