The Wesleyan women’s basketball team is ready for another successful season with an opening game against Gettysburg this weekend. The Lady Cards finished last year with a 22-5 record and behind a strong returning squad and few fresh faces hope to do just as well.
Although Nora Bowman ’05 and Sue Frost ’05 left the team following their graduation, many good athletes still remain in the team for the new season. Led by three talented captains, the Cardinals women basketball team has a reputation of being the hardest working team at Wesleyan—a reputation they hope to uphold.
Even though the season does not start until late November, the Lady Cards have been training since the start of the fall semester. Engaged in full-time training schedule with weight-lifting, sprinting and pick-up games, the team starts as early as 7 in the morning most days.
Leading this year women’s basketball team to success are captains Hannah Stubbs ’06, Ashley Mastrangelo ’06 and Meghan Robinson ’06. They will be accompanied on the court by guards Sarah Millburn ’07 and Nikki Maletta ’08 stepping in for Bowman and Frost. Other returnees include Kelly Bowman’07, Stephanie Savas ’08, Consuelo Gonzales ’08 and Kristen Cortese ’07, along with Ginny Hermann ’07 and Sarah Milburn ’07. New faces on the team, Shannah Lively ’09, Meredith Lowe ’09, Ali Fourney ’09 and Lucy Sprung ’08 (a transfer sophomore who played for Western Connecticut last year) will add the depth, talent and spark the team needs to have a great season.
