This Saturday, the field hockey team kicks off its season at home against perennial NESCAC rival Williams. Last year the Cardinals suffered only three regular season losses, the first of which came at the hands of the Ephs during the 2004 season opener. That heartbreaking 4-3 overtime defeat remains fresh in the Cardinals’ minds as they look to start off this year’s campaign on a strong note.
“It’s safe to say that Saturday will be one of our biggest games of the season – a chance at the Little Three title and a chance to beat one of the best teams in the NESCAC.” Said center midfielder Courtney Tetrault ’07. A victory on Saturday would put the Cardinals just one game away from their first Little Three crown since 2003, when they capped their regular season, defeating the Ephs to secure the title.
The Cardinals will be returning 13 players, including seasoned goalie Caitlin Kelly ’07 and senior co-captains Amy Rouse ’06 and Liz Dee ’06. In addition to the numerous veterans, the team will look to Isabel Lew ’09, Stephanie Brodsky ’09, and Hailey Sarage ’09, as well as transfer Virginia Weihs ’08, to help avenge last year’s tough loss to Williams.
With a promising group of newcomers and a strong nucleus of proven performers returning from last year’s squad, Saturday’s game promises to be a hard-fought contest between two of the NESCAC’s dominant programs.
“It’s going to be a great game and definitely a battle to the end,” Tertault said.
The Cardinals will take to the field at 11 a.m. at Anderson Field behind Freeman Athletic Center.
