In an effort to raise money for its spring break trip, the women’s tennis team will host a day of tennis at the Vine Street courts on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. It will offer everything from round robin tournaments to private lessons from varsity players. Entry fees range from $10 to $20 and the event is open to Wesleyan students as well as the Middletown community.
“We are offering lessons, clinics, doubles and singles to anyone and everyone who wants to play,” women’s tennis ace Tiffany Lo ’06 said. “We haven’t really done anything like this in the past, and this one was rather poorly advertised, but at least we know what to do in the future now. We currently have about 15 people signed up and we are definitely looking to get more.”
The Cardinals are planning round robin tournaments in both doubles and singles competition at three different skill levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Entry fees for this event are $20. In the doubles draw, the team offers participants the opportunity to pair up with one of the experienced team members.
The team will also offer private tennis lessons throughout the day from the varsity players for $20 an hour, or $10 for students with a WesID. Participants will also have the option of taking part in a tennis group clinic, either at 2 p.m. or 4 p.m., for $10 an hour.
“The usual cost of a lesson is over $50, so it’s a really great deal,” Lo said.
Lo hatched the idea for the fundraiser, but nearly every team member has had something to do with the project.
“The entire team had been talking about doing something like this for a while. The team is doing a fundraiser to raise money for our spring break trip. However, it is not just for money-making purposes,” said Lo. “We are trying to bring the Middletown community together with Wes students to show them who we really are. I know they often think we are loud, obnoxious party animals who don’t know how to properly park cars, and we want to show them that we are great people who would love to get to know them.”
Two Middletown businesses, Illiano’s Ristorante & Pizzeria and PIP Printing, are sponsoring the event. Illiano’s will be delivering pizza to the courts around 3 p.m. and the team will have snacks and drinks on sale all day.
