Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

I wrote a Wespeak for the last Argus explaining and defending Students for Sensible Drug Policy’s (SSDP) decision to bring Richard Stratton, the editor of High Times to campus. The continuation of the Wespeak on page 13 had a headline that made it appear that my Wespeak was critical of SSDP. I am in SSDP and have been for the entire time I have been at Wesleyan. I stated that in the e-mail I wrote that accompanied the submission. I was also involved in bringing Stratton to campus, which I made clear in the article. I understand that newspapers are published on a tight deadline, but if the Argus wishes to title Wespeaks, it is under an obligation to accurately represent the views that are expressed by the author. If you do not have the time to read the Wespeak thoroughly, let the author choose the headline.

Thank you,
Mary Beth Hickcox-Howard, Class of ’04 and SSDP member.

A response from the Wespeak editors:
We are sorry for the error and its implications. We encourage those submitting Wespeaks to include their preferred headlines.
