The indoor track teams continued to take strides in the right direction on Saturday at the Wesleyan Invitational in Freeman Athletic Center.
Once again, there were no team rankings, but there were many individual and team achievements. Three male and two female Cardinals captured first place in individual events.
For the women, Erin Smith ’06 turned in a spectacular performance, winning the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:34:05, and Esther Schlegel ’04 placed first in the 55m hurdles with a time of :08:85.
“Despite it being the first race for the distance runners, they all looked really strong,” said Gina Tassone ’05, who finished in fifth in the 3,000-meter run. “Erin stayed strong throughout the entire race despite no one up there to push her.”
Jenna Flateman ’04 placed second in the 55m in :07.30, Cara Chebuske ’06 placed second in the 600m (1:44.11), and Rebecca Weinstein ’04 placed third with a five foot high jump. Kristy Williams ’06 threw a twenty-pound weight 43 feet and three inches, good for third in that competition. Williams led Wesleyan by finishing third in the shot put as well with a throw of 36 feet, and Schlegel also led Wesleyan in the 200m, finishing sixth with a time of :27.44.
On the men’s side, Owen “Uncle Owie” Kiely ’06 blew away competition away in the 3,000-meter run, finishing eight seconds ahead of the next fastest runner. Pat Moffett ’04 finished in first place in the 55m hurdles (:07:87), and Seth Warren ’05 won the 600m competition with a time of 1:27.47. Bryan Bissell ’04 quoted some lyrics from Dr. Dre to describe Kiely’s performance.
“Prior to Owen’s race, I heard people running around and talking about guns, like he ain’t got none, so I was like, ‘what, do you think he sold them all?’ Needless to say, he won the race handily,” said Bissell. “We need more winning efforts like that in the next couple of weeks if we want the chance to be competitive at the New England Division III meet.”
In other competition, David Newman ’04 finished in sixth place and Greg Heller ’04 finished in seventh place in the 600m. Matt Moss ’05 finished second in the 800m (1:59.45) and Jon King ’07 came in fourth in the 5,000-meter race. Max Piana ’05 and Mshangwe Crawford ’04 made sure the Cards were well represented in the Triple Jump, finishing in second (42′ 2 “) and seventh place (40′ 1”) respectively.
Next up for the Cards is the Tufts Invitational on Saturday, February 7th.
