Sports short: Whitehead ’08 fuels late rally, softball keeps rolling

The Cardinals had an exciting comeback Tuesday at home against non-conference opponent and GNAC leader, Pine Manor College. The two teams were in a deadlock since the first inning until Pine Manor scored a run in the sixth, giving the team a 2-1 lead. Failing to score in the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals entered the last inning behind by one and needing to score.

Rally caps were on as Molly O’Connell ’09 led off the inning by pounding a double to left center field. Karla Hargrave ’08 followed O’Connell with a double of her own, tying the game at two apiece. Julia Chamberlin ’09 followed with a perfectly laid sacrifice bunt, advancing Hargrave to third base and setting up the winning run. Becca Feiden ’08, who had scored the first run for the Cards in the first inning, took a big swing but popped out for the second out of the inning. With two out and one on, Meaghan Dendy ’10 walked, leaving it up to Marcia Whitehead ’08. Whitehead took the pressure well as she singled up the middle to score Hargrave and win the game.

This Friday the team travels to Amherst for the first of three games then finish the series with a double-header in Middletown on Saturday. One win against the Lord Jeffs, who are currently 2-3 in the NESCAC West play, would give the Cardinals an automatic spot in this year’s NESCAC tournament. This would be the first back-to-back appearance by Wesleyan. It would also give Wesleyan their first Little Three Title. Two wins will make Wesleyan a top seed in the West as well as the host of the tournament which begins May 2.
