The men’s and women’s track teams wrapped up their indoor season as graduate student Wes Fuhrman and Ellen Davis ’07 both earned All-America honors in the 5,000-meter at the NCAA Championships at St. Olaf College on March 11, while the rest of the team traveled to South Carolina for the Coast Carolina Invitational over spring break.
Fuhrman barley qualified for Nationals in Minnesota this year as the thirteenth and final qualifier in the event. But Fuhrman showed he belonged there quickly by posting a 14:45.72, good for seventh place and All-America honors. This is the second time Fuhrman garnered All-America honors, the first time coming in cross-country in 2004.
Ellen Davis ’07 picked up her second All-America award of the year at Nationals. Davis came in fourth place in the women’s 5k with a time of 17:11.03. The former All-America honor was collected this past fall after coming in 15th at Nationals in cross-country.
Heading outdoors and down south to some warmer weather, the men’s team came away with two first place finishes, while the women had excellent efforts by Cara Chebuske ’06 and Steph O’Brien ’08.
Sam Grover ’08 won the triple jump with a mark of 44′ 9“, and his teammate Nate Huddell ’07 ran away with the 3000-meter steeplechase title (9:45). Chebuske came in fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:20.13 and O’Brien posted at 1:00.63 in the 400m, good for 12th out of 42.
”The team responded well to being outside for the first time this year,“ said Dan McLaughlin ’07, ”We were able to adjust quickly, which bodes well for the northern schedule.“
The northeast season commenced on April 1 at Trinity, where Kristy Williams ’06 held it down for the throwers and McLaughlin and Grover posted second place finishes in the 110m-hudles (16.64) and triple jump respectively. Williams won the hammer (135′ 1”) and came in third in the shot put with a throw of 37′ 2 3/4“.
Anda Greeney ’07 was the distance standout as he breezed to a fifth place finish in the 1,500m with a time of 4:06.13.
The team hopes to keep the momentum going into next weekend, when they head to the Tufts Invitational on Saturday April 8
