Cross country closed out its season this past weekend as the squad competed in the New England Division III Championship hosted by Williams College on Saturday, Nov. 13. The Cardinal men tied with Bates for a 5th place finish out of the 49 teams tallying 150 points, while the Lady Cards finished 12th of 51 squads with a total of 334 points.
Completing the 8k course in 26:07.3, Matt Katz ’11 placed 10th of 333 runners and qualified individually for the NCAA Division III Championship to be held at Wartburg College on Saturday, Nov. 20. With only four teams making Nationals, Bryan Marsh ’13, who finished 14th overall in New England with a time of 26:13.7, also earned an individual qualifying spot for the NCAA meet.
The top seven individuals not among the qualifying teams are selected as individual qualifiers for the NCAAs. It will be the first trip to Nationals for both Katz and Marsh. The last Cardinal male to attend Nationals was Sean Watson ’08 in 2007. Wesleyan last qualified as a team for the NCAA meet in 2006.
Both Katz and Marsh earned all-New England Division III honors with their top-35 finishes. Skyler Cummins ’13, who came in 33rd as the Cardinals’ third finisher, also achieved all-New England status with a time of 26:38.1. Rounding out the Cardinals’ scoring five were Charles Lang ’11 in 40th (26:45.3), and Jamie Lawrence ’12 in 53rd (27:01.4).
As usual, the NESCAC dominated the final team standings at New England as seven of the top 10 teams in the region represented NESCAC colleges (#2 Williams, #4 Middlebury, #5 Bates & Wesleyan, #7 Bowdoin, #8 Tufts and #10 Amherst).
On the women’s 6k course, Julia Mark ’13 led Wesleyan to the finish line, placing 50th of 336 entries with a time of 23:51.4. Not far behind in 52nd place was Jess Levin ’11 with a time of 23:54.4.
