Softball Team Falls in Non-Conference Games

The Cardinal softball team started its weekend on Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader, rescheduled from earlier this season, against neighboring rival Western Connecticut State. Game one, despite featuring offensive explosions on both ends, ended in a 21-11 loss for Wesleyan. The second game was called due to darkness after four innings, with the Cards only trailing by one.

On Friday, the team was back at it again, facing NESCAC rival Trinity College in a doubleheader.  The Bantams took a decisive 10-0 win in the first game, and although the Cardinals put up a better fight in the second, they fell 6-4.

In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Wesleyan held the lead for a majority of the innings. With two runners on base, Sam Epstein ’12 crushed a home run to centerfield, giving Wesleyan a 3-0 lead just after one inning. Trinity got on board with one run in the second, but behind the impressive pitching of Dana Levy ’12 Wesleyan was holding on to a 4-2 lead by the end of the sixth inning.  A pair of seventh-inning runs by the Bantams tied the game, sending it into an extra eigth inning.

Trinity built on its momentum in extra innings, smacking a two-run homer in the 8th that proved to be the winning hit of the game. Allee Beatty ’13 had a hit in the contest that extended her notable hitting streak to 11 games.

Wesleyan takes a break from the doubleheaders on Wednesday by hosting Coast Guard Academy for a single non-conference game. Coast Guard is the fourth-ranked team among NCAA Division III squads. The team will resume conference play this weekend, traveling to Hamilton College for the regular 3-game series. Hamilton is currently 0-9 in the NESCAC West conference.
