The Cardinals returned to Wesleyan in good shape after Thanksgiving. During their break the squad got in a couple lifts, along with some up-tempo practice and technique work.
The Cardinal men ventured up to Springfield, Mass. to compete in the annual Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 20. Joey Schwartz ’14 received the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week for his 4th place finish out of the 31 competitors. Schwartz pinned the returning all-American from Merchant Marine Academy in 1:12, and also defeated the returning NEWA 4th place finisher from Rhode Island College 13-6 during the tournament. NEWA Individual rankings came out on Tuesday, and Wesleyan featured a ranked conference wrestler in nine of the ten weight classes. Four of Wesleyan’s wrestlers are ranked 3rd, two are ranked 4th, one is ranked 5th, and two are ranked 7th in their respective weight classes. Schwartz (125 lbs) ranked 3rd, Jefferson Ajayi ’13 (184 lbs) ranked 3rd, Dave Amrhein ’12 (197 lbs) ranked 3rd, Dan Conroy ’11 (heavy weight) ranked 3rd, Howard Tobochnik ’13 (149 lbs) ranked 4th, Troy Sampson ’14 (157 lbs) ranked 4th, Nick Scotto ’13 (141 lbs) ranked 5th,Maika Nagata ’13 (133 lbs) ranked 7th, and Kyle Roosa ’13 (174 lbs) ranked 7th.
Following the tournament, Wesleyan wrestling ranks 4th in the conference (out of 14 teams).
Next up, the Cardinals are off to the R.I.T. Invitational in Rochester, NY for their third tournament of the season. The team is healthy and excited to compete this Saturday, Dec. 2, with action beginning at 9:30 a.m.
