With the diversity of views and ideologies present on campus, it’s no surprise that sometimes we get the image of a fragmented Wesleyan community. With the Fast-a-thon, we want to change this. We would like to invite all members of the Wesleyan community, and the greater Middletown community to come together on Sept. 30 under a common notion of fasting to end local hunger. In what is often a very politically and religiously divided community, we believe the Fast-a-thon will provide an opportunity for everyone to forget their differences and unite to end local hunger.
For those of you who have always wanted to help out the greater Middletown community but have never found the time or means to do it, Fast-a-thon offers a great convenience. You can simply donate your points online at www.wesleyan.edu/ocs/fasathon.html or drop off the donations at one of the many boxes placed all around campus. The proceeds will go to the Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown. This is an amazing opportunity to really make a difference in the Middletown community. Last year the money we raised was more than 50 percent of the donations they received during the entire year. Donate as much as you can in your capacity for this worthy cause. Please remember that every point counts and there is no such thing as a minimum or maximum donation.
Even if you feel that you cannot fast, please donate points and join us at the “break-fast” Banquet on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 5:45 p.m. in the Beckham Hall, Fayerweather Tower; there will be interesting guest-speakers, free and delicious Haveli food and free Fast-a-thon T-shirts. Last year we were able to collect over $16,000 from several hundred participants, and this year we hope to raise even more.
Small point donations might seem trivial but, when combined, they can play a significant part in reducing local hunger. So, we would like to invite you all to join us in a day of physical and spiritual devotion to foster a sense of unity and to make a difference. We hope you will join us.
