In the last week, numerous web sites and major newspapers across the country have informed bike owners that U-shaped bike locks can be opened with the end of a ballpoint pen. These locks, including the all-popular Kryptonite lock, were previously hailed as the best available and can cost up to $90. Certain websites have posted videos that show how to unlock U-locks within a few seconds by simply mashing the end of a ballpoint pen into the keyhole and turning clockwise.
Public Safety urges students with bikes to keep their bikes either at indoor bike racks or inside their rooms. Students should also consider taking their bikes home during October break.
