Oh man, did I screw up. I think I looked at the Film Series calendar and decided to disregard the dates and the movies that are playing. This Wednesday we will not be showing Mean Streets, but RASING ARIZONA. Don’t panic, we will show Mean Streets, but on the following Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Here’s the drill:

RAISING ARIZONA
USA, Dir: Joel Coen. 1987
WEDNESDAY Feb. 13, 7:30 p.m. $4

The second feature film from the Coen Brothers is a definitive film in their progression as filmmakers, and one of the funniest films of the last twenty years. Many elements found in this year’s best picture contender No Country for Old Men are presented here as well. If you’ve seen No Country, think of Raising Arizona as the family comedy companion piece. Don’t worry if you’re turned off by Nicolas Cage, he is exceedingly charming and unconventional in his performance as a pathological convenience store crook married to a corrections officer with a passion for fertility. I saw Tex Cobb (the bounty hunter who blows up a rabbit with a hand grenade) at a concert a few years back. We made eye contact, and I thought he was going to beat the living shit out of me until I recognized him as simply a blessed badass.
