While dorm rooms and MoCon have probably become familiar territory, the campus offers a wide variety of nooks and crannies new arrivals are probably unaware of. Whether resourceful, useful, or just plain entertaining, these spaces deserve a moment of students’ ample Orientation week time.
The Fitness Center’s collection of Ellipticals and weight machines rivals that of any local 24-Hour Fitness, but without the fees or the sweaty middle-aged women. The Center is open Monday through Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 9:45 p.m., Thursday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. Although sports teams flood the afternoons, in the mornings the center is generally less crowded.
WESU is one of the oldest non-commercial radio stations in the country. The station offers free-form music programming run by several student DJs and some local area personalities. Since becoming an affiliate of National Public Radio (NPR) last year, the radio station broadcasts public radio programming during certain hours. While not actually a place, the station can be found at 88.1 on any radio dial, or listen to a live broadcast and view a program guide at www.wesufm.org.
The Scores and Recording Collection, located on the third floor of Olin Library, houses the library collections of musical scores and sound recordings. Students can access an impressive array of experimental and world music in addition to CDs and disc sets from several major artists. And all you need to check out CDs, tapes, and scores is your Wesleyan ID.
The practice rooms located beneath the CFA provide almost-soundproof immersion, great for instrument and voice rehearsals and just about anything else. Most are equipped with pianos and remain open daily until midnight.
At the Office of Behavioral Health Services, students can schedule a confidential session with an on-campus therapist. Located at the edge of the CFA next to Malcolm X House, the office is located in the Davidson Health Center. Research Assistants at Olin Library are experienced librarians who will work at students’ beck and call. Experienced in particular fields, this help is invaluable for first-time research of obscure topics ranging from Eighteenth Century Japanese writers to Swedish Cinema. The Olin Periodicals Room has current issues of all types of publications, be it The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, or Italian Vogue. Located on Olin’s bottom floor through the glass double doors, the room also provides group study space and views of Andrus Field.
The Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies provides a soothing escape for stressed students. Featuring a Japanese style Tatami room and newly expanded Japanese garden, the center is open for students on a daily basis. Housing a small collection of East Asian Arts and historical archives, the new hosts periodic lectures and exhibits. The center is located at the corner of Washington Street and Wyllys Avenue.
