University Archivist and Head of Special Collections Suzy Taraba won a $100 gift certificate to Broad Street Books as her proposal of “Caleb” was chosen as the name for the new online catalog. The name is in honor of Caleb Thomas Winchester, a member of the class of 1869.
The contest to select the new name came after the library introduced a new online catalog earlier this semester.
Winchester was one of the first editors of the Argus and a member of Psi Upsilon, according to Taraba. He served as University Librarian from the time of his graduation until 1873, and from 1873 to 1890, he was professor of Rhetoric and English. During this time, he continued to serve as Librarian until 1885. In addition to his life at Wesleyan, in the early 1880s, Winchester studied at the University of Leipzig before becoming the first Olin Professor of English in 1890, a position he held until shortly before his death in 1920.
