Field Hockey Pulls Overtime Victory

On Wednesday night, the Cardinal field hockey team traveled to South Hadley, Mass. and triumphed over Mount Holyoke College 3-2 in overtime. The last two years Wesleyan split with Holyoke, and the win gave Wes its 24th all-time victory over the Lyons.

Holyoke jumped on the board first with an early goal three minutes into the first half. Wes struggled to convert their many shot attempts until 23:22 when Liz Chabot ’12 scored off of a pass from Jamie Thabault ’11. Chabot closed out the half with a second goal assisted by Allie Lynch ’11 to give Wes a 2-1 lead at halftime. In the second half, Wes out-shot Holyoke eight attempts to four, but failed to extend their lead. The defense held strong and the outcome was looking promising until one last offensive push came from Holyoke in the final seconds of the game. Shara Robertson of Holyoke scored at the buzzer sending the game in to overtime.

Both teams played solid defense in overtime; each only allowing two shot challenges for the opponent. Wes finally broke through with a goal from Morgan McCauley ’12 nine minutes into overtime.

Wesleyan resumes conference play this weekend traveling up to Maine to face off with NESCAC foe, Colby College. Last year, Wes lost to Colby 3-2 in overtime in a hard fought match. The team is fired up and looking to continue their promising season.
