Australian researchers studying fiddler crabs in Mozambique have hypothesized that female crabs will exchange sex for protection from other males. The researchers found that when males were tethered at the edge of a female’s territory, they would attack invaders 95 percent of the time, possibly because the female crabs will almost always have sex with their male neighbors.
