The track team traveled to the Tufts Invitational this past Saturday, Feb. 5, which proved to be the scene of another outstanding performance by the Wes men and women.
On the men’s side, tri-captain Tommie Lark ’12 succeeded in getting an NCAA provisional effort with a win in the triple jump at 47-1 ½. He also came within one- quarter of an inch of breaking his own record that he set in 2009. With this jump, he is ranked nationally in the top ten for Division III, but such success is not new to him; he went to the NCAA tournament in 2009. Lark also won the long jump with a 21-8 ¼ leap. Sam Roth ’13 had a great performance in the 1000-meter run, placing 10th overall with a time of 2:38. Tri-captain Matt Katz ’11 came in ninth overall in the men’s mile with a time of 4:26.13. Ernest Wingate ’14 had another excellent meet, and came in fifth place in the 400m (0:51.86) and seventh in the 55m hurdles (0:08.79).
On the women’s side, the 5000-meter race proved to be the most eventful for the Cardinals, with four runners placing among the top six. Libby Lazare ’14, who placed second overall with a time of 18:37.73, was followed by Julia Mark ’13, Liz Wheatley ’09, and Hannah Zimmerman ’13, who placed third, fifth, and sixth, respectively, all within 15 seconds of Lazare. Sierra Livious ’14 finished fourth in the shot put (37-0 ¼). She was also a part of the fifth-place 4x200m relay team, along with Isabel Stern ’14, Lia Monti ’13 and Julia Frieze ’12. Co-captain Jessica Levin ‘11 had a great mile, coming in sixth with a time of 5:24.55. Overall, both the men and women’s Cardinals are improving with each meet.
