While Wesleyan students run in frantic circles around Foss Hill, fueled only by the weakly caffeinated brews of Bon Appetite, few know that in only a few minutes they could be in a cozy armchair, enjoying one of the rich roasts of Klekolo World Coffee.
Proprietor and connoisseur Holly Rose hand-selects her beans from seven different roasters, ensuring her customers only the highest quality. For the addicts among you, a favorite may prove to be “Pony,” a roast containing several times the amount of caffeine found in regular coffee.
For 13 years now, Klekolo has drawn customers from every corner of Middletown’s diverse community. Serving Connecticut Valley Hospital patients and the professionals that help them, alternative youths and aging Italians, Klekolo is a testament to the fact that good coffee has the power to break down both our nervous system and our social divides.
Why is it that Wesleyan students are so loath to descend the hill to enjoy all this much-beloved Middletown venue has to offer? One reason is that Klekolo does not accept points (the currency to which we are all so bound) but only because the University has denied Klekolo the opportunity to participate. While other universities, in an effort to give students more options and local businesses more traffic, are eager to incorporate local eateries into their meal plans, Wesleyan remains mysteriously insular. In walking a few minutes down Court Street for coffee, however, one moves Wesleyan’s relationship with Middletown in a healthier direction. And one can count on some great-tasting caffeine to fuel the ascent back to campus.
