The Inaugural Poetic Census Open Mic
Who: Everyone interested in writing. And reading. And reading their
writing. And listening to people reading their writing.
What: An open-mic reading of student writing.
Where: The ’92 Theater
When: Friday, Sept. 13, 9-11 p.m.
Why: This reading will be the culminating event of the Poetic Census, a movement spearheaded by Davy Knittle ’11 and Chiara Di Lello ’10, which, Knittle says, “seeks to make writing more accessible to and for the Wes community, and to recognize the constantly changing nature of the Wesleyan writing community.” To this end, the Poetic Census this year consisted of four key questions, which University writers answered in e-mails to the organizers. They are: “What does a writer need? Where can writing go? What is your favorite word? How does Wesleyan feed its writers?” How, indeed? Come find out at the Open Mic.
Rec Life BBQ with the Ginger Ninjas
Who: The Ginger Ninjas, a rock band that travels and powers their amps using bicycles. Also: anyone who likes BBQ, bicycles and/or rock music — in short, anyone with a soul.
What: A green food and music extravaganza, sponsored by University environmental group EON.
Where: High Rise/Low Rise Complex.
When: Saturday, Sept. 13; music begins at 1:30 p.m.
Why: How do we love this event? Let us count the ways…The Ginger Ninjas have a badass name and a boss agenda that involves an innovative (not to mention physically demanding) blend of art and activism. They cycle to all their tour dates, riding amps, generators and instruments from city to city over grueling hilly terrain. These maddeningly virtuous road warriors are also educated to boot, singing in Spanish, English and French in a style they describe in their press release as “mind shaking love groove folk funk roots rock explosive international pedal powered mountain music for a pleasant revolution.” Got that? And if nothing else, you can at least grab some ecologically friendly burgers and run.
