Sports Shorts: Wild win for baseball team

Wesleyan’s baseball team sunk Coast Guard 8-7 on Cardinal turf Thursday afternoon after a wild pitch scored pinch-runner Mark Noonan ’08 with no one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Noonan stole second as a pinch runner for Mac Clonan ’05, who led off the inning with his third hit of the ballgame, a single up the middle. Rob Coughlin ’07 followed Clonan with a single of his own, giving the Cardinals a chance to claim victory over the Bears with runners on the corners with no one out. The second pitch to Jesse Leavitt ’06 from the Coast Guard hurler bounced to the right of the catcher, allowing Noonan to scamper home for the winning run. Tom Bloss ’05 earned the victory, pitching a scoreless ninth inning in relief.

It was a big win for the Cardinals as they head into a three-game weekend series against Little Three rival Williams. The Cardinal offense put together a 16-hit barrage, one of their best offensive showings of the season, gaining their fourth win. The Cardinals hope that the momentum from Thursday’s victory will carry over into the weekend series and kick start a streak for the Birds.

The weekend action against Williams kicks off on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the first game of a home doubleheader.
