Although I really don’t want to write this Wespeak in that it is essentially continuing yet another annoying ongoing debate which is irresolvable due to being based on opinion, I feel as it is my duty to do so in order to highlight some important points. First of all, I have to say that I agree with Jake Gold to the extent that most of the Argus comics pretty much suck and aren’t funny. However, if you look at most comic strips in most newspapers nowadays this seems to be the trend (maybe this is the reason they no longer call them “The Funnies”).
Key examples: The Family Circus and Cathy. Both sucky. Both not funny. However, I also agree with the Kaplan-Mulqueen-Saffer (2006) theory of Foodstuff actually being quite funny, because, seriously, baby carrots asking normal carrots (mommy carrots?) “Where do babies come from?” is hilarious in that babies can’t talk, let alone form interrogative sentences!
What I do object to is the blatant attack on Jake Gold’s character, right to have an opinion, and lumping with Evan Carp. That’s really not fair because you are simply hoping to vilify Jake Gold’s name by the mere proximity with Carp’s. This is much in the same way as the words “liberal” and “feminist” have negative associations for the “conservative right”, which in turn has a negative association for most Wesleyan students because it is screwing our country (the ultra-liberal left isn’t doing much better either, though).
Also, I think it unfair to say that the debate spawned by
Jake Gold (HAPPY! SEX! CANDY! CHRISTMAS! PIZZA! See how that’s done?) is not valid because it “ignores” more salient issues, such as the Carp debate, is bullshit. Heaven forbid a single person at Wesleyan doesn’t feel moved to write a response to Carp or doesn’t give a shit about the entire debate? But most importantly I think you are missing the entire point and genius behind Gold’s “controversial” Wespeak and really the only thing that matters in this entire stupid debate: That in the very Argus which contains your article, a classic CALVIN AND HOBBES strip appears in the comics section!!!!!
If this is the result of all this bickering, then the ends definitely justify the means. Unfortunately, and I challenge anybody to argue this point, in comparison it essentially changes even Foodstuff into the Family Circus.
Also, while I’m at it my friend Evan Katin-Borland is not Evan Carp. Wow! More than one Evan at Wesleyan?! So stop bothering him.
