Normally I look forward every year to this season, the season of the non-denominational holiday of my choice. At a school like Wesleyan, where we pride ourselves on accepting everyone, I am appalled by the University’s choice to decorate this campus with Christmas decorations.
I realize that the majority of people in this country are Christian, and that Christmas is the holiday that dominates the shopping malls and online shopping sites, but aren’t we past that materialistic bullshit here?
When going to Olin Library today to study, I passed by some students handing out red ribbons. That’s fine, I thought, student groups are welcome to express the individuality of their religion, no matter how white-supremacist or WASPy it may be. When I arrived at the library, though, I was horrified to see that our secular University had picked up on the theme, and had attached red ribbons to the columns!
When John Wesley founded this University in the 1800’s, I know he intended it to be a beacon of Methodism to the state. But that was then, and this is now! When those Christian Holocaust-deniers handed me those ribbons they told me to support the fight against AIDS, which I can only assume is an acronym intended to bring down non-Christians.
Come on, Wesleyan, get with it. Whatever AIDS is, I’m sure I don’t want to fight it, because it means that Christmas is taking over even this fine University. I expect to see some menorahs and whatever decorative emblems of Kwanzaa on the columns of Judd very soon. Otherwise I’m gonna protest, and we all know how far that gets people these days.
