Derrty Birds fly in Penn, Maine
The men’s track team placed seventh and the women’s track team placed ninth of eleven teams at Saturday’s NESCAC Championship meet in Waterville, ME.
Sam Grover ’08 continued his great season, taking second place in the triple jump (45-0 1/2), and Matt Moss ’05 was part of each third place finish for the Cardinals. Moss covered 800 meters in 1:56 and joined forces with Chris Greene ’08, Jeremy Solomon ’05, and Owen Kiely ’06 for a third place Distance Medley Relay finish (10:25).
“In the DMR, Owen handed off in the lead with another fierce close, Chris Greene blazed his first ever sub 51-second leg, and Mossy put us back in the lead on a monster effort,” Solomon said. “Unfortunately I got served down the last stretch by both of our little three rivals, but it was the most unbelievable team feeling I have been a part of in sports, our teammates littering the back straight and cheering us on. Credit a lot of it to Coach Crooke, and pardon my language, but this team is fucking nasty!”
Solomon also ran in the 5,000-meter event where he and Wes Fuhrman ’05 finished fifth (15:09) and sixth (15:11) respectively.
“Fuhrman just gets better every week,” Solomon said. “I thought our distance squad had its best overall performance since I’ve been here. I was lacking some energy personally until I watched Kiely put on his mean mug and grit out a victory in his 1500 heat. Moss followed that up with a near victory in the 800, and our team was really feeling it.”
Erin Smith ’06 set a new team record for the women in the 10,000-meter race, crossing the finish line in 37:52, good for second place. Liz Colville ’05 was fourth in the event (38:20). Ellen Davis ’07 scored second place finish for the Cards in the 5,000-meter race (17:55.66), just a fraction of a second ahead of third place finisher Courtney Quirin ’05 (17:55.72). Davis and Quirin also ran at Thursday’s Penn Relays, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships with times of 17:12.91 and 17:39.72 respectively.
The Derrty Birds will head to the New England Division III meets at Springfield (men) and Bates (women) this weekend.
Softball team splits doubleheader
The softball team split a doubleheader at Hamilton during the season’s final action on Saturday, losing the first game 5-4 and winning the next game 16-9. The Cardinals closed the season with an 11-18 record (2-6 NESCAC West).
Molly Gaebe ’07 was 4-for-8, hitting for the cycle on the day, including the lone Cardinal home run of the season. Gaebe also had 5 RBIs and scored four times, ending the year with a .341 batting average.
Leadoff hitter Becca Feiden ’08, the team leader in batting average (.366) went 3-for-6 in the twin bill.
Wes Crew in the middle
The men’s crew team finished eighth out of 14 crews and third out of nine second varsity eight crews in the New England Championships Sunday on Lake Quisigamond. The varsity four finished 11th out of 17 competing boats.
The women’s crew team finished 13th out of 18 entrants, while the second varsity eight crew placed 14th out of 16 entrants.
Both teams hope to get bids to the ECAC Championships this weekend, which will also take place on Lake Quisigamond in Worcester, MA.
