Wesleyan Hosts First NESCAC Championships Since 2001

The men’s and women’s track teams competed in the NESCAC Championships, their last meet of the regular season, this past Saturday on their home turf. This was the first time since 2001 that Wesleyan had the honors of hosting the meet. Both the men’s and the women’s teams ran well against the competition. Williams College won the men’s meet with a score of 188.50, followed by Bates with 122.50 points. Williams came away with the title on the women’s side as well, with a score of 194, and Middlebury followed in second with 163 points.

The Wesleyan men collected 54 points on their way to a seventh-place finish.  At the 2010 NESCAC Championships, Wesleyan came in ninth with just 19 points.  Quad-captain Tommie Lark ’12 had another outstanding meet, with his triple jump of 48-11 3/4 setting a new Wesleyan and NESCAC Championship record as Lark won his second career NESCAC triple jump title. Lark earned an automatic qualification for the NCAA Division III Track and Field Outdoor Championships with his win, and also placed second in the long jump with a respectable leap of 22-5.

Paulie Lowther ’13 ran a strong race in the 100m, placing second with a time of 11.10.  Jack Pacelle ’13 placed in two events for the Cardinal men, coming in fourth in the 400m (49.61) and fifth in the 200m (22.94). Quad-captain Charlie Lang ’11 came in fourth place (31:45.89) in the 10k, while Skyler Cummins ’13 also placed fourth in the 5000m. Ernest Wingate ’14 finished sixth in the 110m hurdles (15.55), and also ran the lead legs in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Wingate, Pacelle, James Dottin ’13, and Lowther placed seventh in the 4x100m relay, while the 4x400m team of Pacelle, Wingate, Lark, and Dottin also placed seventh. The distance medley relay of Austin Cotant ’13, Seth Hafferkamp ’12, Sam Roth ’13, and quad-captain Matt Katz ’11 gave Wesleyan another seventh-place finish.

“The team finished the season with confidence and high expectations for the future,” Katz said.

The Cardinal women ran to an overall ninth place finish with 15 team points. Hannah Zimmerman ’13 led the way for the Cardinals with a fourth-place finish in the 10k event with a time of 38:27.72, followed by Julia Mark ’13 in seventh place. Sierra Livious ’14 put forth a throw of 11.44 meters, good for sixth place in the shot put. Co-captains Kathryn Kulowski ’11 and Jessica Levin ’11 both had successful meets, as Kulowski placed seventh with a season-best high jump of 1.55 meters, while Levin’s personal time in the 1500m of 4:48.24 was good for 10th place.

In the relays, the 4x400m team of Julia Frieze ’12, Livious, Sydney Morgan ’14, and Lia Monti ’13 earned a seventh place finish (4:11.32), while the 4x800m relay of Mark, Ceili Brennan ’13, Levin, and Nicole Lepre ’13 also finished seventh (9:53.61).

“I’m really proud of the way the whole squad came together,” Levin said.  “I look forward to watching this young group mature; I know they will be able to do damage in the NESCAC in the years to come.”

Next up for the track team is the New England Division III meet hosted by MIT on Friday and Saturday.
