Women’s Tennis Takes Down Smith

The Wesleyan women’s tennis team saw resounding success this past weekend, claiming victory over Smith College.  The match, played at Smith in Northampton, Mass., was the fifth win in a row for the Lady Cardinals as they downed the Pioneers 9-0.

The Cardinals, clearly stronger and deeper than the Pioneers, made a few adjustments in the ladder.  Genevieve Aniello ’13 did not play singles on the day, but teamed up with Grace Smith ‘14 at #1 doubles, where they would win the superset 8-4.  Sarah Miller ’12 teamed up with Kiley Robbins ’14 for #2 doubles, while Captain Linda McDougal ’11 and Nicki Softness ’14 played #3 doubles together, winning their matches 8-4 and 8-6, respectively.

Despite resting Aniello and Miller, who usually play at the top of the ladder, Wesleyan would still go on to win all six singles matches to complete the sweep over Smith.  Each girl would win in straight sets.  Smith played #1 singles, followed by Robbins, McDougal, Softness, Kaitlyn Clark ’14, and Hannah Berkman ’12.  The Cardinals will finish the regular season with a home match against Connecticut College on Tuesday.  The Camels are well below the Cardinals in the standings, with an overall record of 8-11, including 1-5 in the NESCAC.
