Track Team Opens Outdoor Season

The men’s and women’s track and field teams sprung into action this past weekend at the annual Jerry Gravel Classic hosted by Westfield State on Saturday, March 26.  They competed against NESCAC rivals Amherst, Tufts and Conn. College, along with other Division II and III schools. There were some excellent individual performances in the first outdoor meet of the season.

Matt Katz ’11, tri-captain of the men’s team, hopes that this meet will fire Wes up for the rest of the season, he said.

The Cardinal women finished ninth out of 18 teams with 33 team points.  Hannah Zimmerman ’13 had an outstanding race in the 10k, finishing first with a time of 38:57.90. She won by a margin of 47 seconds in a field of 11 runners. Co-captain Jessica Levin ’11 helped boost the team’s score, contributing eight points to the team total by grabbing third place in the 1500m event (4:58.27) and seventh in the 800m (2:29.53).  Libby Lazare ’14 took sixth in the 1500m (5:04.42), and Ceili Brennan’13 took home third place in the 800m (2:25.90). The 4x100m relay squad of co-captain Kathryn Kulowski ’11, Julia Frieze ’12, Emma Vasta-Kuby ’14 and Lia Monti ’13 rounded out Wesleyan’s scoring with its sixth-place effort (:54.46).

On the men’s side, the team finished eighth out of 16 teams by collecting a score of 37 team points. Freshman Ernest Wingate had an outstanding day, accounting for more than one-third of the team’s points. He took second in the 110m hurdles (15:62), which made him the highest Cardinal finisher for the day. Wingate also came in fourth place in the 400m hurdles (:58.35), and was the leadoff leg of the Wesleyan fourth place 4x100m relay (:44.37). For the relay, he was joined by Jack Pacelle ’13, James Dottin ’13 and Paulie Lowther ’13. Lowther also came in third place in the 200 meters with a time of :23.13. Although many of the men’s distance team did not compete, Sam Roth ’13 (4:09.21) and Katz (4:09.54) placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 1500m race.

“[This] meet really showed our team what we had to work on in the future, but I am excited about the upcoming season,” Katz said.

Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday, April 2 with a trip to Coast Guard for its invitational.
