Cards Split Double-Header with Rutgers-Newark

The Cardinals baseball team looked to build on its successful spring break trip as it travelled to Newark, N.J., for a double-header with Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, March 26.  After a slow start in the opening game that saw the Cards suffer a 12-2 defeat, the team rallied behind pitcher Mike Barsotti ’12 later that evening for a 4-3 victory to split the series.

Rutgers-Newark’s offense proved to be too much for the Cardinals in the first game, building a solid 7-0 lead after four innings and tacking on five more in the fifth to run away with a 12-2 victory.  Sam Gruppo ’14 and Kyle Weiss ’12 combined for four hits and two RBIs in the loss.

In game two, the Cardinals fought back behind a strong pitching performance by Barsotti, who allowed just six hits and one earned run in seven innings to seal the victory.  With two outs in the top of the third, Alex Meadow ’12 hit a two-run double and was brought home by a Justin Freres ’11 single to give Wesleyan a 3-1 lead. Weiss extended the lead with an RBI double in the sixth and Jimmy Hill ’14 helped hold on to the victory, retiring the last four batters he faced and earning his first career save for the team’s tenth win of the season.

The Cardinals open their NESCAC season at home this weekend, Friday, April 1, in a three-game series with Hamilton.
