The men’s and women’s track teams competed at home this weekend as Wesleyan served as host of the Collegiate Track Championships. Because the University hosted a championship to which it was not invited, it competed unofficially and as an unscored entry. Although the runners did not score officially, rather ironically, both teams had solid performances.
On the men’s side, Skyler Cummins ’13 and Bryan Marsh ’13 were tearing up the track in the 3k. Skyler would have won the event in 8:38.26, and Bryan would have been third, with a time of 8:39.84. Ernest Wingate ’14 would have been third in the 400m (0:51.77) as would the 4x400m relay squad of Wingate, Jack Pacelle ’13, Paulie Lowther ’13 and Tommie Lark ’12 (3:27.56). Zak Malik ’14 ran a strong 800m with a time of 2:05.51.
“The team had shown glimpses of excellence, which bodes well for the championship season of indoor track as well as for outdoor track,” said tri-captain Matt Katz ’11. “Outdoor track is what we focus on, so as a team I feel we are ready to be strong competitors in the NESCAC.”
Qualified runners will compete at the New England Division III Championships hosted by Springfield on Feb. 18 and 19.
The women’s side also blew away the competition in many of the events. Julie Platt would have been second in the 3k with a time of 11:02.59. Chloe Lalonde ’13 would have been fourth in the 1000m (3:16.13). The distance medley relay team of Jess Levin ’11, Ceili Brennan ’13, Nicole Lepre ’13, and Julia Mark ’13 also finished ahead of the pack (12:54.55) by more than six seconds. Isabel Stern ’14 also ran a fast 55m hurdles race with a time of 0:09.08, which would have put her in seventh place. Alissa Goldberg ’14 had a great weight throw of 7.28m.
“The women’s team posted some solid performances this Saturday, and I am pumped to see what we can do next week at Division III Championships,” Levin said.
Qualifying Cardinals will be vying for top-eight finishes, good for all-New England recognition.
