Wesleyan Wrestling Continues Dominance

Led by the 4-0 record of 125-pounder Joey Schwartz ’14, who also earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors during the tournament, Wesleyan collected 103 points to place second of nine teams during the annual R.I.T. Invitational Sat., Dec. 4.  Schwartz was one of two Cardinal champions as Jefferson Ajayi ’13 also went 4-0 to capture first place at 184 pounds.  Both Ajayi and Schwartz were seeded third in their weight class.  Schwartz defeated the top seed from SUNY Cortland St., a team ranked 20th nationally, in the finals 5-3, while Ajayi conquered the 4th seed in the title bout, 3-2.

In total, 13 of the 20 Cardinals entered in the tournament placed among the top six in their weight class.  Nine of the 13 were either freshmen or sophomores.  Other featured finishers were third-placers Nick Scotto ’13 at 141 pounds, Kyle Roosa ’13 at 174 pounds and Luke Erickson ’12 at 197 pounds.  Capturing fourth was Maika Nagata ’13 at 133, Howard Tobochnik ’13 at 149, and Troy Sampson ’14 at 157.  In fifth place was Chris Alvanos ’11 at 125, Greg Faxon ’14 at 141, and Dave Amrhein ’12 at 197.  Sixth-place postings came from Gideon Levy ’13 at 174 and Dan Conroy ’11 at heavyweight.

That’s a very good result by the Wes wrestlers.

But someone (that would be me) should remind Argus headline writers and editors that a second place finish, no matter how admirable, is not dominance.

Dominance is supremacy, control, ascendancy. Second place, even in a large group, is by definition not dominant.
