Volleyball Starts Season Off On Wrong Foot

In a replay of last year’s inaugural matches, the Wesleyan women’s volleyball team started off the season on a sour note, dropping 0-3 decisions to both Wellesley and Little Three rival Amherst on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Cardinals look to regain ground in their home-season opener against Keene State on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Laura Yim ’13 took over the starting setter slot for the Cardinals after starting two matches last season and effectively added 10.2 assists and 3.3 digs per set. Yim was assisted by outside hitter Casey Reed ’12, who averaged 3.5 kills and 4.5 digs per set, and Kim Farris ’14, who supplied eight kills and held a team-high .368 hitting efficiency. The backcourt was manned by Lesley Faulkner ‘11 and Monica Leslie ‘14, who racked up 13 kills each. Libero Ruby Hernandez ’11 acquired a team-best 30 digs over the two sets.

The Cardinals suffered during the afternoon with 16 services errors, compared to just four for Amherst and Wellesley combined. Meanwhile, the squad has held to .114 and .158 hitting efficiency versus Amherst and Wellesley, respectively, while the opposition held .205 and .204 efficiencies.

The Cardinals begin NESCAC round-robin play Saturday, Sept. 18 against Williams and Hamilton, hosted by Connecticut College.
