The Wesleyan men’s soccer team put on a performance in the 2009 season that came close to perfection. With a record of 10-0-4, the squad’s undefeated regular season set a school record for longest un- beaten streak (15 games). While a NESCAC tournament title eluded the top-seeded Cardinals, Wesleyan earned its third trip to the NCAAs in the last five years and advanced to the round of 16. The team posted an impressive final record of 12-2-5.
On the field, power forward Keisuke Yamashita ’10 and midfield- er Nick Whipple ‘10 (all-NESCAC and all-New-England) took charge of the team offensively. With five goals and five assists in the season, Yamashita led the Cards in points, accumulating 15, while Whipple had three goals and four assists, tallying up to ten points for the season. Together, this dangerous pair was practically unstoppable. Among the other top offensive players was Geoff Zartarian ’11 and Asante Brooks ’10, who each had three goals and three assists on the season. Averaging a total of 140 shots on goal (14.6 per game) in the 2009 season, the Wesleyan offense refused to stop until the ball was in the back of the net.
In addition to having a strong offense, the Cards also maintained a sturdy defense. Anchoring the defense was All-American goalie Adam Purdy ’13, who finished off the season with an impressive .50 Goals against average (GAA) and .886 save percentage on the season. Also helping defend the back end of the field was second-team all-NESCAC Jacob Mergendoller ’11. Defenders Jory Kahan ’10 and Mark Murphy ’10, also stood strong on the back end of the field. The combination of these four strong defensive players created a brick wall defense for the University, which very few opponents could surpass.
After such a strong 2009 season, this year’s squad will have a tough act to follow, but with a roster consisting of 23 returning players and a large group of incoming recruits, the 2010 season looks promis- ing for the Cardinals. Although the deficit of seven talented seniors will be felt in the upcoming season, the loss will provide a good opportunity for some of the younger players to step up and lead the team. This year’s tri-captains, Jacob Mergendoller, Geoff Zartarian, and Tim Dodds ’11, will provide a core of seasoned veterans with outstanding leadership, while the large group of talented freshman will contribute new zest and enthusiasm, ultimately creating a great balance for the team.
Men’s Cardinal soccer returns with a season opener on Saturday, Sept. 11 on their home turf as they face off against NESCAC Little Three Rival, the Williams Ephs.
