Women’s Basketball Edged by Worcester St.

The women’s basketball team dropped a narrow 53-51 decision to Worcester State College at home on Thursday, dropping the team to 3-3 on the year. Worcester State shot only 36 percent from the field, but a 19-for-55 performance (34.5 percent) from the floor doomed the Cardinals.

Wesleyan led 3-2 just over two minutes into the game, but the Cardinals did not get another basket until the 8:04 mark, nine and a half minutes later. Despite shooting only 25 percent from the field, Wesleyan went to the locker room at halftime down only six, 25-19.

Wesleyan took the lead in the second on a jumper by Sam LaCroce ’12 with 15:31 to play, 30-29. The Cardinals’ lead was short-lived, however, as Worcester State used a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Wesleyan tied the score at 42-42 with 4:11 to play and again at 47-47 with 2:01 showing, but Worcester State withstood the rally both times.

With 44 seconds to play, a pair of free throws by Gaffney gave Wesleyan a 51-50 lead. Worcester State missed its next shot attempt, but the Cardinals missed the front end of a one-and-one with 23 seconds left. A three-pointer by Worcester State gave the visitors a 53-51 lead, and Wesleyan missed a jumper in the lane as the buzzer sounded.

The Cardinals will look to head into the winter break with a winning record when they take on Hunter College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
