You may wonder if people with deaf blindness really can live independently. Isn’t it easier for a deaf blind individual to be taken care of rather than hassle with the day-to-day decisions about how and where to live? Isn’t there such place for deaf blind individual to be placed in nursing homes just because any normal person lives there? The answer is NO to both questions.
For a first time, Communication Advocacy Network (CAN) had initiated deaf blind services this year by hiring new Support Service Providers (SSPs). At the same time we began working collaboratively with Board of Education Blind Services (BESB), state agency. As result of this announcement, we had received several calls by deaf blind consumers who may require SSPs and other support services. However, we are seeking qualified people to apply for SSP positions.
We are pleased to host a first SSP workshop on October 24, 2009 at Hartford Deaf Club and will plan a series of SSP training in this coming winter and spring 2010.
This first workshop covers an orientation to the SSP for interested people to work with deaf blind consumers. The workshop will begin on October 24, 2009 from 9 AM to 3 PM by two presenters, Elaine Ducharme and Suzann Bedrosian.
This workshop is sponsored by FSW, an approved RID CMP sponsor for Continuing Education activities. This Professional Studies \ program is offered for 0.4 CEUs at the little/none content knowledge level. No partial CEUs will be offered. The cost will be $50 per person and there are no refunds.

CAN was established in 2005 in Connecticut to serve as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization through donations, sponsorships and fund-raising events. CAN’s primary purpose is to advocate as a centralized statewide agency with auxiliary support services for deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf blind and people with hearing losses, regardless of race, age, and gender and ensure those services most citizens take for granted are also accessible to those citizens who cannot hear. The funds are tax-deductible according to the federal law.
