Fall 2008 Female Co-Athletes: Lisa Drennan (’09) and Liz Wheatley (’09)

Lisa Drennan ’09 – Volleyball

Drennan concluded an incredible four years at Wesleyan with a dominant senior campaign, leading the conference in total kills for the third time in her illustrious career. The Ann Arbor, Michigan native splashed onto the scene as a freshman, receiving second-team all-NESCAC honors. That was her only year on the second team, however, as Drennan has been a staple on the all-NESCAC first team for the past three years.

In her sophomore year, she was named the NESCAC player of the year, and led the league in kills, after having finished second in her freshman year.

In 2008, Drennan led the NESCAC in kills again, this time with an average of 4.70 per game, more than one kill per game ahead of her closest competition. She also was ranked second in the conference in hitting percentage this season, and was a cornerstone on the Cardinal squad that finished the year 21-7 overall and 8-2 in NESCAC play.

Drennan finished her Wesleyan career ranked second in school history with 1865 kills, just 35 shy of record-holder Eliza Allen ’03. Drennan finished with a better career average than Allen, however, with an average of 4.84 per match, a team record. She will go down as one of the top players in Wesleyan volleyball history.

Liz Wheatley ’09 – Women’s Cross Country

Wheatley received first-team all-NESCAC honors in 2008 after placing sixth at the NESCAC championships out of 117 runners. She likely has earned herself a qualifying position in the 2008 NCAA Division III Championship. Wheatley began her 2008 campaign by winning the 5k course at the Wesleyan Invitational on Sept. 27.

She continued to pace the Cardinal runners all season long, finishing first on the team at the New England Open’s 5k course and also led the team at the Little Three Meet at Williams, receiving third place overall. Wheatley will look to secure a spot in the NCAA field with a strong showing this Saturday, Nov. 15 at the NCAA New England regional qualifier at Williams.
