This year, a time-honored tradition has been broken.
Seniors, your class president, the honorable Ravid Chowdhury ’09, is presumably being barred from speaking at your graduation. It has been suggested that a private, basically secret assembly will decide who’s going to address us as we accept our diplomas. Wait a second here … why the sudden change?
For years, the senior class president has always had the opportunity to speak at graduation. I suppose things would be different if Ravid did not want to speak, but he does. Ravid is an intelligent, articulate, humorous person who deserves this speech.
The fact of the matter is, an assembly has already met and decided who will speak at our graduation: That assembly is the entirety of the senior class. When we cast our votes for class president, we choose our graduation speaker. That choice is, and should be, ours. After all, who represents the wishes of the senior class more than the senior class itself? Certainly not some closed-door, secret committee.
I strongly urge all seniors to get in touch with Ravid and sign his petition to overturn this decision. As a class president who is already making strides toward improving our final year here at Wesleyan, he deserves your support, and we deserve the chance to hear him speak at our graduation.
