Dear Olin Library regulars,
On a recent route sweep of the main reading room, I managed to retrieve 29 bottles and cans from the trash. I do this on a pretty regular basis, at the risk of looking crazy, not to mention that trash receptacles are host to any number of unpleasant bacteria (I also hate the smell of wasabi and soy sauce, inevitable spillage from sushi containers). I gathered my bottles and cans and arranged them neatly on my table and had to find a clever way of moving them to the recycling bins. The point is this: please recycle! It is really the most effortless contribution I can think of. I’m not asking you to change your behavior drastically. I admit that I don’t check my tire pressure regularly and that I prefer plenty of (artificial) light when I do my homework. But a little part of me dies every time I see a bottle or can thrown into the trash. It means I have to reach into an unclean trash receptacle yet again. It’s especially painful because I’m sure most of you deposit your bottles and cans into the proper receptacles when there is a convenient circular hole showing you the way. I know you’re all good people. In fact, let’s dissociate morality from the action of recycling. Consider it your own hardly burdensome contribution. It’s purposeful and I promise you that you’ll feel better having done it.
P.S. I’m sorry I talk so much in Olin. I’m working on my “indoor voice.”
